Keep your TM numbers when you move to cloud

The biggest worry we hear before a migration is simple: “will I lose my number?” The answer is no — you can keep your TM numbers when you move to cloud. The number on your cards, your Google listing and your signage stays exactly the same; only the system answering it changes. Here's how that works in Malaysia, and the two routes to do it.

Your number and your phone system are separate things

A phone number is just an address that tells the network where to send a call. The phone system — the PBX that rings desks, plays your IVR and records calls — sits behind it. Moving to cloud changes the system, not the address. That's why keeping the number is normal, not exceptional.

Two ways to keep your numbers

1. Keep your TM trunk (bring your own carrier)

If you're on (or moving to) TM MLS, the cleanest route is to keep that trunk and simply point it at a cloud PBX. Your numbers never leave TM — you only re-route where the calls land. This is fast, low-risk, and avoids a formal port. It pairs naturally with a PRI-to-MLS migration.

2. Port the numbers to a new carrier

If you want to leave TM entirely, the numbers are ported to a new SIP provider. This is the same principle as mobile number portability — you keep the number, the new carrier takes over delivery. It takes longer and follows TM's release process. The mechanics are the same as in porting a business line to cloud.

How we avoid downtime

The cloud system is built and tested in parallel while your current phones keep running. We place test calls to and from your numbers before anything switches. On cut-over day, routing flips during a quiet window — callers never hit a dead line. No staff retraining gap, no missed customers.

What to have ready

  • Your latest TM bill (it lists your numbers and account details).
  • The full list of DIDs/numbers you want to keep — mains, hunt groups, fax lines.
  • Whether you're keeping the TM trunk or porting away, so we pick the right route.

From there it's our job. The full end-to-end path is in moving from TM MLS to cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my TM landline number if I move to a cloud phone system?

Yes. Your TM numbers can move to a cloud PBX, either by keeping your TM MLS trunk (bring-your-own-carrier) or by porting the numbers to a new SIP provider. The number that customers know stays the same.

Will my phones go down during the number move?

No, if it's planned right. The cloud system is built and tested in parallel, and the cut-over is scheduled so there's no gap in answering calls.

How long does it take to keep TM numbers when migrating?

If you keep your TM trunk, the number stays put and only the routing changes — days, not weeks. A formal port to a new carrier takes longer and depends on TM's process.
